How is call duration captured?

Short answer

Nexicall takes the duration from the phone rather than asking you to estimate it, and stores it in minutes and seconds. For a call you place from the app, the log opens with the duration already filled in. It is editable everywhere it appears, so if a figure looks wrong you can correct it and the correction sticks.

How it is measured

When you start a call from Nexicall it notes the moment you dialled and the moment the call ended, and reports the difference. Where the phone tells it exactly when the call connected, it uses that instead, which is the more accurate of the two. Durations are stored in seconds and shown per call in minutes and seconds, so a short call reads as the forty seconds it was instead of rounding up to a minute. Totals across many calls are still shown in hours and minutes, because that is what is useful in a report.

Why it is sometimes approximate

On a real phone the operating system often suspends an app while a cellular call is in progress, so the app is not running to see the moment the other person picked up. When that happens the figure is measured from when you dialled, which includes the ringing time. That is why the duration is editable everywhere it appears. It is a good default rather than a billing record — if you need exact figures, correct the outliers and they will stay corrected.

Related questions

Why does a call show no duration at all?
Either it was logged without one, or the measured figure was implausible and was left empty rather than saved as something wrong. You can add the duration yourself on the call entry.
Are durations shown in reports?
Yes. Individual calls show minutes and seconds, while totals and averages over a period are shown in hours and minutes.
Does duration sync across my devices?
Yes. The duration is stored with the call on the server, so a call logged on your phone shows the same duration in the web app, and the other way round.
