Android reminders arrive late or not at all

Short answer

Nexicall schedules call reminders as notifications on the phone itself. Android's battery optimisation — and on some brands a separate autostart permission — can delay or drop them. Excluding Nexicall from battery optimisation and allowing autostart resolves it in most cases. A reminder also needs a time on the follow-up, not only a date.

Settings to change

  1. Open Settings, then Apps, then Nexicall, then Battery — and choose Unrestricted. Depending on the phone this is called Don't optimise or No restrictions.
  2. In the same Nexicall screen, open Notifications and make sure they are allowed. On Android 13 and newer, notifications stay off until you grant them.
  3. On Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO: Settings, Apps, Manage apps, Nexicall — turn on Autostart, then set the app's battery saver to No restrictions.
  4. On Huawei and Honor: Settings, Battery, App launch — switch Nexicall to Manage manually and leave Auto-launch and Run in background on. On Oppo, Realme and vivo the same setting is under Battery or App management as Allow background activity.

Why Android does this

Android suspends apps it believes you are not using, and most manufacturers add a stricter layer of their own on top of Google's. That is genuinely good for battery life and genuinely bad for anything scheduled to happen later. A reminder is scheduled work, so it is exactly what these systems postpone — sometimes by minutes, sometimes until you next open the app. This affects every app that reminds you of something, which is why you may have seen the same advice for calendar and alarm apps. An app cannot opt out on your behalf; the permission has to come from you.

Other reasons a reminder may not arrive

A follow-up needs a specific time. If you set only a date, no reminder is scheduled on the phone for it — those are covered by the daily summary instead. Only your nearest upcoming reminders sit on the phone at any one time, so a follow-up months out is not pending there yet. It becomes a scheduled reminder as it comes closer. Reminders are local to the phone. They stop if Nexicall is uninstalled and they do not move to a new device by themselves. The follow-ups are stored on the server, so they come straight back when you sign in again.

Does this affect my contacts syncing too?
It can delay it. Nexicall syncs your address book when the app starts and when the connection changes, so a phone that has fully suspended the app will not sync until you open it again. Opening Nexicall is enough to bring both sides up to date.
Will excluding Nexicall from battery optimisation drain my battery?
Barely. Nexicall does not run continuously in the background: there is no location tracking and nothing polling while the app is closed. What you are allowing is a notification that was already scheduled to go off at the time you asked for.
